| Emotional Aspect of Care |
| What you should expect when you are in the care of a seasoned and experienced gastric band care provider is professional service while maintaining that personal and intimate caring and understanding that you deserve. I know how difficult it is to come to this decision to undergo weight-loss surgery. Now that you have undergone this adjustable gastric banding procedure, you deserve the best care possible from someone who really understands what you are experiencing. I am on this weight loss journey with you. I feel personally vested in your success professionally and personally. This is a practice setting where a rapport is established between patient and provider that is parallel to those that are most important in our lives. That is because we ride this emotional journey together. We get through the hurdles and obstacles of dealing with hunger, weight-loss, frustration, joy, deterioration and improvement of your medical conditions, That is why finding the right practitioner is important. |
| Adjustment Aspect of Care |
| The adjustment of the gastric band involves a series of simple processes. We must determine |
What your weight is and how it has changed. Did you lose or gain weight? |
What are your symptoms? |
Are you hungry or have an appetite and how often? |
Are you easily eating doughy bread or tough meats? |
Portion size, 1 cup? or 3 cups of food? |
Regurgitating? how often? |
Heartburn or reflux? |
Poor Weight-Loss? but not “eating” food? |
| Based on how you answer these questions, helps determine what intervention you will receive. If an adjustment if required, it may be to either “tighten” (adding fluid) or “loosen” (removing fluid) from the band. If you are losing weight, are satisfied with eating small portions and doing well, you might not require an adjustment. There is a misconception that the tighter the band the better you will do. This is far from the truth. If you are too tight, you will gravitate towards soft calories like ice cream or chocolate, creamy soups, etc, because they slide through the band and are able to eat large quantities of this type of food. This maladaptive eating behaviors lead to poor weight-loss. If you are having this type of response, you need to be unfilled slightly. The rational behind that is that if you are able to eat healthy foods, you will fare much better because the meals will be more nutritious and filling than liquidy or soft foods. |
